Wedding Photographer in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai dresses a wedding in teak and mountain air — a Lanna-style ceremony with a morning blessing by monks, portraits at the dark-teak hall of Wat Phan Tao and among the ruined great chedi of Wat Chedi Luang next door, and the rice fields outside the city for the evening; the cool season, November to January, is the one to book.

About Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna kingdom, and its old city is still a square of moat and brick walls with temples on almost every street. Wat Chedi Luang's great brick chedi, broken by an earthquake in the sixteenth century, is at its most striking in early-morning light, and the carved wooden halls of Wat Phra Singh stay softly lit at any hour. Above the city, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep stands at about a thousand metres at the top of a 306-step staircase lined with naga serpents, with the whole valley below it on a clear day. The north runs on its own calendar. November to February is the cool season, with fresh mornings and the clearest skies of the year, and the November full moon brings Loi Krathong and Yi Peng, when candles float on the river and paper lanterns hang across the streets — releasing sky lanterns in the city is restricted to organised events. From about February to April, smoke from seasonal burning can hide the mountains for weeks, usually worst in March. The rains from May to October turn the rice fields around the city a bright green.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a wedding photoshoot in Thailand?

Most sessions run between forty-five minutes and two hours. In Thailand the time of day matters more than the length: the sun rises and sets between roughly six and seven o'clock all year, the soft light lasts only a short while because the sun climbs fast, and by mid-morning heat and hard overhead light take over. An hour that starts at sunrise or ends at sunset usually gives more than two hours at noon. The photographer's packages on their profile say exactly what each length includes.

Which month is best for a beach wedding in Thailand?

It depends on the coast. Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and Koh Lanta are driest from about November to April; their rainy season runs roughly mid-May to mid-October and peaks in September. Koh Samui and its neighbours have the opposite pattern, with the heaviest rain from October to December. Plan the ceremony for the last hour before sunset — the sun sets between about six and seven all year — and give the photographer time for portraits in that light before the reception. If the ceremony is at or near a temple, ask the temple first: rules for weddings and shoots differ from one temple to the next.

How much does a photoshoot in Chiang Mai cost?

Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Chiang Mai: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.

When is the best time for a photoshoot in Chiang Mai?

November to early February: cool, dry mornings and clear skies, the season the old city's temples are made for — and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, on the mountain above town, is calmest early. Loy Krathong and Chiang Mai's Yi Peng usually fall on the November full moon: beautiful, crowded and regulated, with sky lanterns banned in much of the city and near the airport and most releases held at organised events, so check the current year's rules. Avoid February to April if you can, when burning-season haze hangs over the north, worst in March. The rains, roughly May to October, turn the rice terraces green from about August and gold towards the harvest in late October.
