Proposal Photographer in Chiang Mai

Propose at Wat Pha Lat, a forest temple on the slopes of Doi Suthep where water runs over the rocks and the city opens out below β€” or on the terrace of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep at the end of the day; from February to April the burning-season haze can hide the view, and November to January usually gives the clearest air.

About Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna kingdom, and its old city is still a square of moat and brick walls with temples on almost every street. Wat Chedi Luang's great brick chedi, broken by an earthquake in the sixteenth century, is at its most striking in early-morning light, and the carved wooden halls of Wat Phra Singh stay softly lit at any hour. Above the city, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep stands at about a thousand metres at the top of a 306-step staircase lined with naga serpents, with the whole valley below it on a clear day. The north runs on its own calendar. November to February is the cool season, with fresh mornings and the clearest skies of the year, and the November full moon brings Loi Krathong and Yi Peng, when candles float on the river and paper lanterns hang across the streets β€” releasing sky lanterns in the city is restricted to organised events. From about February to April, smoke from seasonal burning can hide the mountains for weeks, usually worst in March. The rains from May to October turn the rice fields around the city a bright green.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a proposal photoshoot in Thailand?

Most sessions run between forty-five minutes and two hours. In Thailand the time of day matters more than the length: the sun rises and sets between roughly six and seven o'clock all year, the soft light lasts only a short while because the sun climbs fast, and by mid-morning heat and hard overhead light take over. An hour that starts at sunrise or ends at sunset usually gives more than two hours at noon. The photographer's packages on their profile say exactly what each length includes.

Where in Thailand should we propose, and when?

Choose the coast by the month. The Andaman side β€” Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Khao Lak, Koh Lanta β€” is at its best from about November to April; its rainy season runs roughly mid-May to mid-October, wettest in September. The Gulf islands β€” Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao β€” work the other way round: wettest from October to December, with November the peak. Agree a spot and a signal with the photographer beforehand; they arrive early, blend in with the other people on the beach and start shooting as you walk into frame.

How much does a photoshoot in Chiang Mai cost?

Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Chiang Mai: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.

When is the best time for a photoshoot in Chiang Mai?

November to early February: cool, dry mornings and clear skies, the season the old city's temples are made for β€” and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, on the mountain above town, is calmest early. Loy Krathong and Chiang Mai's Yi Peng usually fall on the November full moon: beautiful, crowded and regulated, with sky lanterns banned in much of the city and near the airport and most releases held at organised events, so check the current year's rules. Avoid February to April if you can, when burning-season haze hangs over the north, worst in March. The rains, roughly May to October, turn the rice terraces green from about August and gold towards the harvest in late October.
