Karon Viewpoint over three bays

A roadside lookout in the south-west of the island that takes in Kata Noi, Kata and Karon in one wide frame — a short stop rather than a session.

The viewpoint everyone calls Karon is not above Karon at all. It sits on the hill road between Kata Noi and Nai Harn and looks north along the west coast over three bays at once — Kata Noi directly below, then Kata, then Karon — with the open Andaman on the left of the frame. Many people still call it the Kata viewpoint.

It is a roadside platform rather than a park, and a regular stop for island tours, so it is quietest early in the morning, before the minibuses; the light on the bays is warmest in the late afternoon, when there is more company at the railing. Treat it as a fifteen-minute stop on the way south: one wide frame with the coast behind you, then down to the sand. For a proposal, the early-morning quiet is the reason to come — the photographer can wait at the railing as just another visitor.

Below it, the bays themselves face the sunset. Kata Noi, the smallest, is the easiest to keep clear of other people; Karon is long and open, good for a walking frame that needs distance. In the monsoon, from about May to October, the view is at its greenest, but a red flag on these beaches means no swimming, literally.

Early morning for an empty railing; late afternoon for the warmest light

Tips

Plan it as a short stop on the way to the beach, not a session of its own. Traffic runs right behind the platform: stay off the road and never climb over the railing for a better angle.
