Most sessions run between forty-five minutes and two hours. In Thailand the time of day matters more than the length: the sun rises and sets between roughly six and seven o'clock all year, the soft light lasts only a short while because the sun climbs fast, and by mid-morning heat and hard overhead light take over. An hour that starts at sunrise or ends at sunset usually gives more than two hours at noon. The photographer's packages on their profile say exactly what each length includes.

Light, breathable fabrics — linen and cotton — that won't show the heat, in colours that sit well against green water and pale sand. If the route takes in a temple, both of you need shoulders and knees covered: a light shirt over a dress, or a sarong over shorts, solves it in a minute, and shoes you can slip off help, since they come off before you enter a hall. In the hot season, from about mid-February to mid-May with April the hottest month, keep the session to the first hour after sunrise or the last before sunset.

November to April. Khao Lak's beaches face west and are long and quiet, which makes the hour before sunset the natural slot for a session. The Similan Islands, the day trip most people come for, are a national park closed to visitors every year from mid-May to mid-October, and the boats leave early in the morning. From May to October the monsoon brings rain and heavy surf, and a red flag on the beach means no swimming. Don't put the session on the evening of a Similan trip: sunburn and salt in your hair show in every frame.
