Family Photographer in Ayutthaya

A family session in Ayutthaya works by bicycle — the old island city is flat, the ruins sit on open lawns with room to run, and Wat Phra Si Sanphet's three chedi make a backdrop children remember; start at opening, carry water, and keep everyone off the brickwork.

About Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam for four centuries until the Burmese army sacked it in 1767, and what survived is a city of brick and stucco ruins on an island where three rivers meet, inscribed by UNESCO in 1991. It photographs in warm tones that flatter a session: weathered red brick, pale stucco, saffron cloth draped over some of the Buddha images and green lawns between the temples. Wat Mahathat holds the image people come for, a sandstone Buddha head held in the roots of a tree; the custom is to kneel or crouch so that no head in the frame is higher than the Buddha's, and the guards are firm about it. The three tall chedis of Wat Phra Si Sanphet line up for a clean wide shot, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram, on the west bank of the river, is the place to finish as the sun goes down behind its towers. A boat around the island at the end of the day shows the temples from the water. The ruins have little shade, so mornings and late afternoons are the shooting hours; the cool months from November to February are the most comfortable, and covered shoulders and knees are expected wherever monks are present.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a family photoshoot in Thailand?

Most sessions run between forty-five minutes and two hours. In Thailand the time of day matters more than the length: the sun rises and sets between roughly six and seven o'clock all year, the soft light lasts only a short while because the sun climbs fast, and by mid-morning heat and hard overhead light take over. An hour that starts at sunrise or ends at sunset usually gives more than two hours at noon. The photographer's packages on their profile say exactly what each length includes.

Is Thailand's heat too much for small children during a shoot?

Not if the session is planned around it. Book the first hour after sunrise or the last before sunset, keep it to about an hour, and bring water, a hat for the walk there and a spare outfit — children end up in the sea whether it's planned or not. The cooler months, roughly mid-October to mid-February, are the most comfortable, though that is also the rainiest stretch on Koh Samui and its neighbours. On the Andaman coast — Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, Koh Lanta — the rainy months bring rough seas and red-flag days, when children shouldn't swim.

How much does a photoshoot in Ayutthaya cost?

Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot in Ayutthaya: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages differ by how long the session runs and how many edited photos you receive, so compare a one-hour walk against a half day before you book.

When is the best time for a photoshoot in Ayutthaya?

Late afternoon into sunset, ideally between November and February. The ruins are open ground with little shade, so midday from March to May is hard going, and the rains last until about mid-October. Wat Chaiwatthanaram, across the river from the old city, is the classic sunset frame. At Wat Mahathat, visitors photograph the Buddha head held in the roots of a tree by crouching, so that their own head stays lower than the Buddha's — a sign of respect worth keeping. Renting Thai traditional dress near the temples has been popular since the 2018 TV drama Love Destiny; the usual temple dress rules still apply. Ayutthaya is an easy day trip north of Bangkok.
